Sitting Position and Saddle Adjustment in Road Cycling

Saddle selection and position are among the most impactful adjustments in bike fitting — affecting power transfer, comfort, and long-term joint health on every ride.

After covering the importance of cleat adjustment, we now turn to the second step in bike fitting: the optimal position and adjustment of the saddle. Saddle position plays a crucial role in power transmission and comfort — but before it can be adjusted, the right saddle must first be found.

Finding the Right Saddle

As part of a bike fitting, the distance between the sit bones can be measured electronically using Vélobsessive's specialized device — providing accurate results that help select a saddle precisely matched to your anatomy.

Saddles come in numerous shapes and designs. The choice between a saddle with or without a cutout (relief channel) should reflect individual preferences and anatomy. Longer saddles offer more freedom of movement; shorter saddles suit a more aggressive position. Women's saddles are specifically designed to address different anatomical requirements. Various shapes can be tested during the Vélobsessive bike fitting.

Adjusting the Riding Position

Saddle Setback

Correct saddle setback enables efficient power transfer and ensures the sit bones and knee are in optimal alignment with the pedal axis. The knee should be directly above or slightly in front of the pedal axis when the pedal is at 90°. For triathlon and time trial bikes, the knee can be up to 7 cm in front of the pedal axis. This is verified using a plumb line or laser.

Saddle Height

Saddle height is calculated based on leg length and verified by measuring the hip angle and knee flexion angle. For road bikes, the ideal knee flexion angle falls between approximately 132° and 142° at the 180° pedal position. Incorrect height is one of the most common causes of knee and back discomfort on the bike.

Tilt Angle

The saddle tilt angle directly affects pressure on the perineum. An incorrect angle can cause numbness or seat discomfort. Fine-tuning the tilt during the fitting helps identify the position that is most comfortable for your anatomy and riding style.
